My name is Jordan Russell. I am a journalism and new media student attending Towson University. I’ve been in Maryland all my life and I’ve had an interest in journalism ever since I finished high school.

I work as the News Editor of Towson’s campus and community newspaper, The Towerlight. The job requires me to supervise a crew of writers, assist them for any help they need pertaining to stories they’re covering, write stories, edit writing copy and use a digital software to create and edit pages for the paper. I’ve been a staff member with the Towerlight for two semesters now and my current focus is to train an assistant and potential News Editor because I’ll be graduating next spring.

During the summer after my high school graduation, I had an idea of what I wanted to do with my life. At first I thought I wanted to be a speaker or go down the Public Relations track, but the more classes I took, the more I realized that I liked to write. But that didn’t mean I wanted to throw the idea of speaking away. So in order to satisfy both of my interest, I’m targeting a career in broadcast journalism.

I’ve had an internship with WBAL TV. I shadowed different reporters as they went to cover their assigned stories and learned how a package came together, different styles of interviewing and was even able to interview some sources myself. I also gained organizational skills and an understanding of how a news team works together. A portion of the internship that I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did was producing. Sometimes I would stay back at the station and help produce the five o’clock newscast.

Along with that internship opportunity, the classes I’ve taken at Towson have helped me improve my skills in order to achieve my ultimate goal of a broadcast profession. I’ve learned audio and video editing, interviewing skills, online design and HTML. Soon I will also have CSS and a deeper knowledge of photography. I also know a little bit about camera work from working with WMJF, Towson University’s television station.

As I continue my time at Towson University, I will continue to update both my portfolio along with my resume.
